Coby, that company that maks all those dirt cheap electronics that you can find at discount stores and shopping mall kiosks plans to enter the netook market early in 2009. Except, for some reason Coby refuses to call their new products netbooks, instead refering to them as “Midget PCs” since they company says they’ll be smaller than netbooks, which seems like a dubious claim, since Coby says the Midget PCs will have 7 or 9 inch displays.

The Intel Atom CPU is a low power processor that’s excellent for netbooks since it helps prolong battery life while providing decent performance. But while power saving capabilities are nice in a desktop, they’re often not as crucial for a computer that spends all day plugged into a wall. With that in mind, it looks like Asus plans to swap out the Intel Atom CPU used in its current generation Eee Box small form factor “nettop” computers and instead use an Intel Celeron 220 CPU.

While Samsung is having trouble keeping up with demand for the Samsung NC10 netbook, it looks like the company is already looking ahead toward the next model. There are several pages on Samsung’s Korean web site that refer to a Samsung NC11 netbook. There don’t appear to be a ton of differences between the two models. The NC11 will be available with Windows Vista or Windows XP, but otherwise both netbooks look pretty similar.

I just had a visit from a friendly FedEx driver who was kind enough to drop off $6,000 in gear from HP and Microsoft. Unfortunately, I don’t get to keep it. Instead I’ll be reviewing the HP Mini 1000 netbook over the next few days and maybe some of the other items in the bundle and then next week I’ll be launching a contest where one lucky Liliputing reader can win the whole bundle of hardware and software, which includes: HP TouchSmart IQ816 PC with Windows HP HDX 18 series Premium Notebook PC with Windows HP MediaSmart Connect HP Pavilion dv4-1145go Entertainment Notebooks with Windows HP Mini 1000 series with Windows HP Photosmart C6380 Wireless AIO HP 564 Series Photo Value Pack Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 Corel VideoStudio X2 Kung Fu Panda widescreen DVDsDon’t forget, 50 blogs are participating in this promotion, which means you have 50 chances to win.

The Samsung NC10 is one of the more popular netbooks due to its combination of excellent build quality and stellar battery life (Some users have reported getting more than 6 hours of battery life from a single charge). But it turns out that Samsung didn’t really expect the netbook to be quite so popular, and the company is apparently having a hard time producing enough units to keep up with demand.
