On the heels of several other notebook announcements, including the QX410, the NF Series, and the SF510, Samsung added to powerful new systems to their lineup with the 15.6-inch RF510 ($899) and the 17-inch RF710 ($999). Aimed at the gamer/multimedia enthusiast crowd, both sport a subtle swirl pattern on the lid, while packing Nvidia 330M GPU, 1GB video memory, and Intel’s Turbo Boost technology under the hood. These two systems also bring USB 3.0 to Samsung notebooks. The RF510 includes Intel Core i5, while the bigger brother packs Core i7, 640GB of storage, and a Blu-ray drive. The RF710 will be sold exclusively through Tiger Direct.
What, the Envy 14 isn’t cool enough for you? Then how about the Dr. Dre-inspired Envy 14 Beats Edition?
While this notebook has the same internal specs as the regular Envy 14–which means Intel Core i5 processors and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics, the Beats Edition will be decked out in all black, with the red Beats Audio logo on the lid. Instead of white backlighting, the keys will glow red; overall, the notebook looksВ intimidating–in a good way. Sure, you don’t get the powerful audio mixing tools that came with the Envy 15 Beats Unlimited Edition, but this machine costs over a grand less ($1,249 starting price vs. $2,299).
Inside, the Envy 14 Beats Edition will feature Beats audio technology, designed in part by Dr. Dre, which means audio quality above and beyond what you’d normally get out of a notebook. The Envy 14 will also come with Beats Solo headphones from Monster, which will help users fully enjoy the sound coming out of their system.
The Envy 14 Beats Edition is on sale now. Check out specs, images, and more new HP products after the jump.

Touching is believing with the new Pavilion dm3. HP has wrapped its latest 13-inch ultraportable, which weighs just under 4 pounds, with a metal finish on the inside and a unique soft touch surface on the outside. But this matte black outer surface isn’t just for show; it’s part of HP’s new CoolSense technology, which makes the machine feel cooler. HP has also placed the hotter components under the keyboard instead of the wrist rest to minimize heat–basically inverting the motherboard–and enlarged the exhaust on the left-hand side. You won’t find any vents on the bottom, either. The intakes are right up front. Click on for more details, as well as a full gallery and video of this beauty.
CoolSense is software, too. The built-in Thermal Assistant utility leverages the dm3′s accelerometer to determine whether the laptop is in your lap (where you would be making a lot of little movements) or on a desk and adjusts performance/cooling accordingly. Measuring less than an inch thin, the dm3 sports an all-new ID that looks pretty slick, and you’ll have the option of adding a backlit keyboard. One other neat feature is Fences, software that lets you better organize your desktop, as well as clean it up with a double tap when you’re ready to make a presentation.
As per usual for Pavilions, this one includes a touchpad with integrated buttons, but based on the improved Clickpad on the Envy 14 we’re hoping the user experience is just as good. Add in up to 7.5 hours of battery life (with the 6,200 mAh battery) and you have an ultraportable with a lot of potential, especially since it starts at just $549. For that price you can expect a Pentium dual-core CPU running at 1.2-GHz, but a Core i3 option will also be available, as will discrete ATI graphics.
Stay tuned for a full review, and check out the gallery, video, full specs, and more recent HP product announcements below.

Learn Moreintegrated graphics to squeeze out more endurance. Other highlights of this sequel to the 1201PN include a larger touchpad and improved webcam. After much dropping, spilling, and poking around, the Panasonic Toughbook C1 won our hearts and an Editors’ Choice award. Starting at $2,500 the C1 is the lightest and the toughest convertible notebook around, surviving some pretty tough abuse, including being stood on. The C1 offered one our smoothest digital ink experiences yet, with virtually no lag and an interface with customizable buttons. On the power front, the C1′s Core i5 processor and 2GB of RAM started up programs in a snap. Plus, the battery lasted for a remarkable 10 hours. The graphics card’s performance didn’t wow us, but it was more than serviceable for our web and media needs.
There were still a few things we did not like about the C1 like, including the 1.8-inch diameter circular touchpad, the weak vertical viewing angles of the screen, and that a webcam does not come standard. The C1 is a system that’s tough not to like, with a silky-smooth tablet interface, and its long lasting Core i5 power, but read our full review of the Panasonic Toughbook C1 for all the details.
I checked out the Gateway ID49C08uВ this week and it looked great! I must give real kudos to Gateway, as they have really been picking up their style game. I remember Gateway machines, especially laptops not be very good looking, but this is on a whole new level.
First the chrome silver cover lid looks very good, love the feel of it. And then much to my surprise, there wasn’t the generic black keyboard and palm rest inside. Nope Gateway continued the look on the inside on not just the palm rest, but on the keyboard as well. Nice touch Gateway!
And if that wasn’t enough, there is even a glowing trackpad as well. Looks like Gateway went all out on the style aspect. I really like this laptop; this is one sleek machine.

When we reviewed the original Sony VAIO P last year, we were seriously impressed by its ultraportable design and vibrant high resolution screen.В However, it was also one of the most expensive netbooks on the market and suffered from poor battery life, both of which put it at a bit of a disadvantage.В Now that over 18 months have passed, we gave the new VAIO P a shot to see if Sony had made any major improvements.В While this device certainly has a lot going for it, it’s a shame that the price and battery life hold it back from being a major contender in its notebook category.
The stand-out feature of the VAIO P is definitely its design, available in a variety of striking colors like lime green or neon pink and weighing only 1.4 pounds.В The 8.9 inch screen can reach resolutions as high as 1600×768, and video playback worked well. We were also surprised that the normally mediocre Intel Atom Z530 processor delivered solid performance.
However, we were still disappointed by the sub-par battery life, lasting only a little over three hours on a charge.В And at a base price of $899.99, we’re not quite sure if this machine is worth the premium for the average consumer.
